CHAPTER 28

Doll

Even with the ferns looming over Doll, hiding her with cool shadows in this crazy heat, just like Sugar did when they first met, hiding her from crazy tigermite guards.

The stalks of the ferns were far enough apart that she could weave around them without too much trouble, even in the slippery mud. It wasn’t as bad as the obstacle course she was forced to train in day in and night out. Even with the piles and piles of smelly pine needles softening the mud like the layers of silk Sugar loved so much to wear.

But … she couldn’t run anymore.

Her legs burned more than when Platybuster forced her through fire-resistance training.

They burned so much they wobbled even as she walked. What happened? She never got so tired so quickly.

She couldn’t even hop onto the next boulders, let alone run on them.

She could barely walk now.

More than a few dime dreadfuls mentioned walking on boulders and avoiding mud to slow down trackers. Not stop them. She wasn’t skilled enough for that. But every moment they were delayed the better. And reducing the tracks her wooden soled shoes were leaving behind, all the better.

But now, the smell of rotting plants … and the something else … something … ashes.

Too much like the stray whiff of Great Demon she’d catch at the Dennery.

The demons were doing something to this forest. That had to be it. The trees, they seemed to lean crooked even more than the most devious tigermites. Their faces seemed to be growing more and more … angry, vicious but she didn’t ever see them move. Not ever. Not even in the corner of her sight, and that’s how she caught so much demonic mischief at the Dennery. Avoided the ambush culls.

But those faces, they were only holes and bulges that looked like faces, right?

Her heavy breathing … with this crazy heat it was like breathing through the veil of silk she left behind.

Maybe she should of brought it.

Even as sweaty as she was, she could even smell the orchids from her outfit. At this rate the demons could simply smell where she was.

No need to follow her tracks.

Her doublet bra, as stretchy as the lacing was, ugh, she was tempted to unlace it, at least a little, even if it exposed even more of her linen bra. A storage ring in her pouch had several changes of linen, since if she smelled too badly, miasma could slip through her pores and good chance she would get sick. Forget escaping then. If only she had some elf blood, then she’d smell perfect and never get sick.

No.

Then she’d be a prime snack for demons too.

Her doublet bra was still snug, and she was sooo tired, but it was as blue as the sky she had yearned to see more often, and now the sky was so easy for her to see, here and there, through the thick ferns, and these … like bruises on their leaves. That wasn’t right, right?

Gulp.

And also … easy for flying demons to see her.
